INTRODUCTION OF WUHAN


Wuhan, abbreviated as "Han" and also known as Jiangcheng, is the capital of Hubei Province, a megacity, the only sub-provincial city in the six central provinces, the central city in central China approved by the State Council, an important industrial base, science and education base and a comprehensive transportation hub in China.By the end of 2019, the city has 13 districts under its jurisdiction, covering an area of 8569.15 square kilometers, with an area of 812.39 square kilometers. The permanent resident population is 11,212,000, with a regional GDP of 1.62 trillion yuan.

Wuhan is located in the east of Jianghan Plain and the middle reaches of The Yangtze River. The Yangtze River and its largest tributary, the Hanjiang River, converge in the city, forming the pattern of three towns separated by the river. Rivers are criss-crossing the city and lakes and ports are interwoven. As the economic and geographical center of China, Wuhan, known as "the thoroughness of nine provinces", is the largest transportation hub of water, land and air in the inland of China and the shipping center of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Its high-speed rail network covers more than half of China and is the only city in central China with direct flights to five continents around the world.

Wuhan is the headquarters of the Joint Logistic Support Force, the core city of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the strategic fulcrum for the rise of central China, and the pilot area for comprehensive innovation and reform. It is also one of the three intellectual concentrated areas in China. Optical Valley of China is committed to building an innovation and entrepreneurship center with global influence. According to the requirements of the National Development and Reform Commission, Wuhan is speeding up to build itself into a national central city supported by four major functions: national economic center, high-level scientific and technological innovation center, trade and logistics center and international communication center.

Wuhan is a famous national historical and cultural city and an important birthplace of Chu culture. The panlong City site has a history of 3500 years. Since the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States Period, Wuhan has always been an important military and commercial city in southern China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Wuhan became the first prosperous city in Central Chu and one of the four kingdoms in the world. The opening of Hankou port in the late Qing Dynasty and the Westernization movement initiated the modernization process of Wuhan, making it an important economic center in modern China and known as the "Chicago of the East". Wuhan, the first place of the Revolution of 1911, has been the national political, military and cultural center for many times in modern history.

1. YELLOW CRANE TOWER


The Yellow Crane Tower is an absolute must-see scenic spot in Wuhan. Regarded as one of the Four Great Towers of China, the tower stands on the banks of the Yangtze River at the top of Snake Hill. It is incredibly beautiful and its cultural significance led to its being made the symbol of Wuhan city.

The Yellow Crane Tower offers visitors an abundance of things to see. The exhibit on each floor has a theme, for example, the theme of the first floor is about legend. On the wall, there is a nine-meter (about 30 feet) long and six-meter (about 20 feet) wide painted porcelain picture which depicts clouds, rivers and cranes to represent a romantic mood in the heaven. The third floor mainly shows poems written to praise the tower in different dynasties. On top of the tower, visitors are treated to a fabulous panoramic view of the Yangtze River, its bridge and the surrounding buildings in Wuhan city. Outside the tower, there are bronze yellow cranes, memorial gateways and pavilions.

Luojia Hill lies at the center of Wuchang District; it's a chain of more than ten hillocks that sit along the southwest coast of East Lake. It forms the natural background of Wuhan University (WHU). The 118.5-meter-high peak of Luojia Hill is the highest peak south of East Lake. Standing on top of it, you have a panoramic view of East Lake and part of the city. The former villas of historical figures like the former premier Zhou Enlai, the great poet Guo Moruo and the novelist Yu Dafu are situated amid the rocks and woods. There are different sceneries in Lojia Hill all year round. The glorious blooms of cherry in spring are famous, while walking in autumn is an excellent experience.

3. EAST LAKE SCENIC AREA

East Lake is located on the south bank of the Yangtze River and in the east suburb of Wuchang district, Wuhan. It is the biggest scenery tourist attraction in Wuhan and also the largest lake within a city in China. The lake covers an area of 87 square kilometers (33 square kilometers of water area), that is five times greater than the area of the West Lake in Hangzhou. Because of its winding banks and crisscrossing ponds and brooks, it is called 'a lake with 99 bays'.

The East Lake scenic area was formed from many famous scenic spots along the bank. The six major ones are: Tingtao (Listening to Surging Waves), Mo Hill (Millstone Hill), Luoyan (Diving Wild Goose), Baima (White Horse), Chuidi (Playing Flutes), and Luohong Hills.

4. TORTOISE HILL

Tortoise mountain (Guishan), which looks like a huge tortoise, is in the north of Hanyang across the Yangtze River from Snake mountain. With the Hanshui River also flowing by in the north, the mountain was a strategic point in ancient wars. It is said that when King Yu in primitive age came here to tame the river, he was confronted by a water demon whom he fought for several years without success. Finally, a tortoise from Heaven arrived and defeated the demon, which turned into Snake mountain. There are many places of interest over the Tortoise mountain, including Yuwang palace, Yueshu Pavilion and Longxiang temple on the top of the mountain; Taiping Xingguo temple and Guiyue Pavilion Zhuangyuan stone in the south; Wang’s Temple, zangma cave and Modao stone in the north; Taohua cave and Luohan temple in the west.

Guqintai: It is at the western foot of the tortoise mountain and the east bank of the moon lake. It was first built in the Northern Song dynasty in memory of Boya and Ziqi's story about "meeting a bosom friend amongst lofty mountains and flowing water".

Qingchuan Pavilion: It is at the foot of tortoise mountain, and faces Yellow Crane Tower from a distance. It was first built in the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty (1522-1567). It was named from a famous poem written by poet Cui Hao of Tang Dynasty.

Guishan TV Tower: It locates on the top of tortoise mountain. It was China’s first self-developed TV tower, opened in 1986. It is the best place to overlook the three towns in Wuhan.

5. OLD CONCESSION DISTRICT OF HANKOU

Hankou concession is once carved up by six countries-the U.K., Germany, Russia, France, Japan and Belgium. A city district with such a variety of old European architecture is rare in China. One-third of the 142 historic buildings sit along the Hankou riverside. The gorgeous and elegant buildings with western architectural styles of the 19th century (such as Classical, Gothic, Rococo, Baroque, and Victorian) are surely a fabulous view.

6. SHOUYI SQUARE




Shouyi square is located in Yuemachang of Wuchang District. It takes Sun Yat Sen statue to Huangxing baijiangtai as its central axis. Wuluo road is divided into North and south, and the south end is one or two meters lower than the north. The square is composed of two axes, namely, the North-South Memorial axis and the East-West cultural landscape axis. At the intersection of the two axes, there is a large fountain flower bed with the pattern of 18-star flag, highlighting the history of the first revolution in 1911.

Next to the square, there is the Wuhan Xinhai Revolution Museum, commonly known as the "Red Chamber". It is the former site of the governor's office of the Hubei army of the military government of the Republic of China, also known as the former site of the Wuchang Uprising army government and the former site of the Xinhai revolutionary army government. It is a landmark landscape of Wuhan's 1911 revolutionary culture.

7. SHENGNONGJIA

Shennongjia is located in northwestern Hubei Province. Legend has it that the Chinese civilization’s earliest ancestor, Emperor Yan, also known as Shennong (神农), once used ladders (“jia”) to collect medicinal herbs here. Hence it was named Shennongjia. It is a national 5A tourist attraction, National Forest Park, National Geological Park and National Wetland Park. Shennongjia is the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Han River, known as the roof of central China. It is the birthplace of Chinese agricultural civilization and the paradise of golden monkey. It has a well preserved subtropical forest ecosystem in the middle latitude of the northern hemisphere, with a variety of geological landforms and meteorology. The hydrologic landscape has many natural mysteries, such as "savages" and albino animals. Shennongjia international tourism area consists of shennongding, Shennong altar, Tianshengqiao, Guanmen mountain, Tianyan primitive ecotourism area and Dajiuhu National Wetland Park.
